Cornflake wreaths
Description
Chocolate cornflake cakes
Resources
180g Cornflakes
360g Milk Chocolate (broken into small pieces) - or white choc and green food colouring
60g Unsalted Butter
60g Golden Syrup (approx. 2 tablespoons)
36 Red Smarties, M&Ms, or Skittles (3 per wreath for holly berries)
Optional: A dusting of icing sugar (for "snow")
Instructions
Pre-meeting prep:
1. Melt the Base: Melt the chocolate, butter, and golden syrup together over a pan of simmering water (or in short bursts in a microwave). Stir until smooth, then let it cool slightly so it is warm but safe for the children.
2. Set Up Stations: Give each of your 12 Squirrels a small plastic bowl with 15g of cornflakes (about a loose handful) and a paper plate.
During meeting:
1. The Pour: Leaders go around and spoon an equal amount of the warm melted chocolate mixture into each child's bowl of cornflakes.
2. The Stir: The Squirrels use a spoon to gently stir the cornflakes until every single flake turns completely brown.
3. The Wreath Shape: Help the children tip their sticky cornflakes onto their paper plate. Show them how to push the flakes into a circle, leaving a "hole" in the middle like a Christmas wreath.
4. The Holly Berries: Before the chocolate sets, the children pick out 3 sweets and press them firmly onto their wreath in a small cluster.
5. Let it Set: Leave the plates to sit while you play a game or complete your closing ceremony. They will firm up enough to slide into a takeaway container by the end of the meeting!
