Deep Space Survival Game

Report Copyright Infringement

Description

Each patrol represents a space ship and mission control gives orders that you have to follow by flipping a card over from on/off. The cards are pretty crazy so its a fun chatic game to be played eithe rin a tight circle on the floor or around a table.

The game runs for 15 -20 minutes including setup. To win, a ship must survive until the timer hits zero. Set the timer for 10 mins once ready to start the game itself if you use the mission control script.

Resources

Printed cards (double sided) or hand made cards with the controls or Index cards and coloured pens to make the control cards. Print off the leaders instruction script and the helpers instructions for when they do spot check inspections on each spaceship.
Timer to use or a countdown on a screen like ipad.

Instructions

1. Split the Scouts into teams of 4 to 6. Each team is a separate "Spaceship" trying to survive. Each team has a colour (blue/red etc or use the patrol name)

2. The Roles: Within each team, Scouts must assign themselves roles:
o Pilot: Steering and engine controls.
o Engineer: Power distribution and shields.
o Communications: Sending/receiving messages.
o Weapons/Life Support: Defence and internal fixes.

3. Give each role 4 to 5 index cards with the "control" names written on them Each card has two states: ON (green) or OFF (red)

4. Mission Control (The Leader): You (or a Senior Scout) stand at the front with a microphone, megaphone, or just a loud voice. You have a timer and a list of catastrophes or follow the script.

It is also much more chaotic and fun if the adults act as "Roaming Disasters" or Fleet Inspectors.

• The Mission Control Commander (Lead Adult): Stands at the front with the microphone/megaphone running the main timer and shouting the orders.
• The Roaming Helpers (1 or 2 Adults): Walk between the tables. They aren't staring at every card, but they are looking for two things:
1. Catastrophe Cheating: Making sure the Scouts are actually standing on one leg during a Gravity Leak or keeping their eyes closed during a Solar Flare.
2. Sudden Hull Checks: An adult can walk up to a table and say, "Engineering scan! Show me your Solar Panel Umbrella!" If it's in the wrong state, the adult shouts to Mission Control: "Commander, Blue Squadron just took a hit!"

How to Play
The game runs for 15 -20 minutes including setup. To win, a ship must survive until the timer hits zero. Set the time for 10 mins once ready to start the game itself.

Step 1: Routine Orders
Mission Control constantly shouts out rapid-fire operational orders to specific ships or the whole fleet.
• "Red Squadron, set Quantum Flux Capacitor to ON!"
• "Blue Squadron, reduce Gravity Valve to 20%!" (or patrol)
• The Scout holding that specific card must quickly flip or adjust it. Teams must work together because Mission Control might tell the Pilot to fix something that is actually sitting on the Engineer's desk.

Step 2: The Catastrophes ?
Every 60 to 90 seconds, Mission Control yells "CATASTROPHE IMMINENT!" and reads from a Catastrophe Card. These instantly change the physical rules of the room or force quick-thinking challenges.
Here are some great Scout-friendly Catastrophes to call out:
• Solar Flare (Blindness): "A solar flare has blinded your external sensors! Pilots, close your eyes. Your Crewmates must physically guide your hands to adjust your controls for the next 2 minutes."
• Gravity Leak (Physical Challenge): "The artificial gravity is failing! Everyone must stand on one leg. If anyone touches the floor with both feet, your ship takes 10% hull damage."
• Asteroid Field (Communication Breakdown): "You are entering a heavy asteroid belt. Comm lines are jammed! Crew members can no longer speak out loud. You must communicate using only hand gestures and facial expressions."
• Oxygen Vent Failure (Physical Task): "Life support is leaking oxygen! The Engineer and Weapons Officer must immediately run to the other side of the room, do 10 jumping jacks, and yell 'OXYGEN RECHARGED' to save the crew."
• Alien Cyber-Attack (Sabotage): "An alien virus is rewriting your console code! Every Scout must immediately trade control panels with the person to their left."
• Meteor Strike (Rapid Fix): "Meteor impact in sector 4! Pilots and Engineers must instantly flip ALL of their control cards to 'OFF' to reboot the system before counting to 10."

Tracking Health & Winning
• Each ship starts with 100% Hull Integrity.
• If a team fails an order, or fails to adapt to a Catastrophe within 15 seconds, they lose 20% Hull.
• If a ship hits 0%, they are "Destroyed" (they can become "Space Ghosts" and help Mission Control shout out orders to distract the remaining alive ships!).
• Victory: Any ship with hull integrity left when the countdown ends successfully lands on the alien planet and wins the game.

See the notes added for additional 'scripts' to work to a 10 minute timer or create your own catastrophes.
